Dividing

Long division repeats four steps from the left: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down.

6 goes into 8 once (1 × 6 = 6, leaving 2). Bring down the 6: 26. 6 goes into 26 four times (24, leaving 2). Bring down the 4: 24, which is exactly four 6s. So 864 ÷ 6 = 144.

If something is left at the end, that is the remainder: 50 ÷ 7 = 7 remainder 1, or 717.

Dividing by a decimal

Move the decimal point in both numbers until you are dividing by a whole number. 4.5 ÷ 0.15 is the same as 450 ÷ 15 = 30.

Check it: multiply back. 144 × 6 = 864.
